Johan has been a passionate contributor to the South African film and television landscape since the first short film he produced and edited under the banner Nouvanaand, Like My Profile, won the Special Mention Award at the 2012 Silwerskerm Film Festival. He’s since attended most if not all of the Silwerskerms for numerous projects, and in 2017 debuted his first feature length film there, Wonderlus, which won Best Script, Best Actress (Lea Vivier) and Best Supporting Actor (Beer Adriaanse). The film garnered much critical acclaim and went on be selected to 9 International Film Festivals, where it got nominated and won a few awards, such as Best International Feature at the New Renaissance Film Festival and Best Director at the Ramsgate International Film Festival.

He is an Honours graduate in Film Studies from the University of Cape Town, and has a Bachelors in Motion Picture Medium from AFDA Johannesburg where he majored in film editing - which was his first foray into the industry and for which he won a SAFTA Golden Horn award in 2017 for the period drama Bloedbroers. He has since edited numerous television shows including comedies Hotel (2016-2022) and Taktiek (2023), has written and directed two made for TV movies, Meisies Wat Fluit (2020) and The Day We Didn’t Meet (2021) and co-directed the critically acclaimed drama series Nêrens, Noord-Kaap (2021).

He has been a company director of Nouvanaand and Nagvlug Films from 2012 to 2023, where he had numerous Producing and Production roles, most notably Post Production Supervisor for all their projects, including the award winning Barakat (2020) and Donkerbos (2022).

Currently Johan is a freelance screenwriter, director and film editor, and most recently has been the Series Director on a long format drama series, Wyfie (2024), produced by Homebrew Films for Showmax.
